One Piece FanFic Recommendations
I was going to do a page with all my fic recs, but I just have so many and want to write so much that it’d be ridiculous. For a more complete list, here is my Fanfic.net account page with everything I’ve ever favourited, I was planing on being a bit more selective on this page
My favorite One Piece ships often involve OCs. This is because of the universe and isolated nature of ship crews. If you want to read a het fic about Marco the Phoenix, for instance, it’s difficult to find a canon female character who you could plausibly ship him with.
CALLING ALL READERS!, my favorite One Piece fic of all time is called ‘To The Red Line’ by Immortal Melody. Annoyingly It was taken off FF.net. I’ve not been able to find it anywhere else online, if you see it somewhere, could you leave a comment saying where please? I’d love you forever. The same goes for a Law/OC fic called ‘Fidelity’.
Title: Though A Bird Can’t Fly, That Doesn’t Mean It Never Will
Pairing(s): None, maybe Zoro/Kuina?
What might have been if Kuina had survived her fall down the dojo stairs. She and Zoro strive to become the greatest swordsman in the world, allegiances and promises notwithstanding.
This fic does an amazing job of building on what we know of Kuina and I adore the character’s personality. Her struggle to overcome the double handicap of being blind and female is deeply engaging. Unlike most fics with physically powerful females, Phalanx doesn’t disregard the harsh reality that women have a physical disadvantage against men. The author’s description of Kuina’s sightless world is incredibly impressive and you understand how she learns to cope with her lack of sight, it becomes an odd sort of advantage. All in all, it’s a women’s struggle achieve recognition despite all odds.
Title: One Piece Drabbles
Pairing(s): Everything and anything, het & yaoi
Drabbles that do not go with any of my other story section… Random character pairings and ratings…
As of January 2014, there are 87 drabbles with 33 pairings and a few genfics. The quality varies; some are overly fluffy and/or songfics, which I’ve never really liked. Despite that, many of the drabbles are insightful and well written, particularly those centred on lesser known pairings. Particularly good chapters are 32, 48, 71, 77,
Title: Something In The Water
The New World at its worst is an inhospitable and terrible place, but even within the jaws of Hell can be found friendships worth fighting for… -MarcoxOC, eventually.
Where do I begin? Kemmasandi creates a mature, compelling and well-rounded cast of OCs abroad the Moby Dick, it feels like they’re canon and Oda just never got round to drawing them. The romance in the story feels natural; you understand why characters feel the way they do. On top of this, the way Kemmasandi creates realistic but diverse cultures and tries to explain the way the One Piece universe works is just…OMG
Title: Diary of a Potato Bag
Author: nothing new in this world
It was supposed to be quite simple: leave her island to fulfill the promise she’d made so long ago. And then a Sea King messed up everything… and the old man and the stupid phoenix too
I legitimately wanted to write a fanfic about this fanfic, thats how great the main relationship is. The narration of the main OC is hilarious, as is her ‘why does crazy shit always happen to me?’ attitude. The canon characters are mostly in character, although Smoker and Hina are children and therefore inherently a bit OOC, but the author gives a good shot at showing how they developed.
Title: No Regrets
Author: Amethyst Turtle
Ohara is dead. Dreams are nonexistent. And the only goal left is to kill the six Strawhat Pirates. AU Robin/CP9-centric oneshot.
Interesting depiction of Robin and how her underlying passion for archeology and sense of identity reacts to the suppression of Cipher Pol. The relationship between Lucci and Robin is also great, you’re left guessing just what he thinks of her behind his stoicism and the unsaid uniqueness of both of them in the other’s lives is really interesting.
Author: Coeur de Coquelicot
Status: Officially Incomplete, but it feels Complete because it ends in a convenient place
“Ohhh…” The girl looked closely at Ace’s face, his dark eyes widening as she suddenly got closer. “Freckles… I wish I had some of those,” she quietly said with admiration.
Funny, so amazingly funny. And the love/hate relationship Ace and the OC have, combined with the undercurrent of emotion, especially on Ace’s part, makes for great reading. Elli as a character is delightfully oblivious to things in a slightly Luffyish way. Also read Twig, it’s a great companion piece from Ace’s perspective.
Title: Friend and Foe
“It is said that you are accompanying the notorious pirate Fire Fist Ace. That alone is already a great offense to your record.” he jeered. “A perfectly respectable person like me, traveling with a pirate? How DARE you suggest such a thing? she answered.
The OC is so unbelievably amusing, it’s like she just tumbles randomly through life without really noticing her surroundings. The idea behind her power is really original and well-tailored to the series.
Title: Shadow Play
Author: Ace’s Shadow Girl
Rating: Explicit (I think? it’s rated M and I can’t be bothered to check)
What happens if the big “Fire Fist” Portgas D. Ace re-meets the girl that took his virginity years ago? And why does the mysterious girl insist on following him even if she annoys him to no end? Does he really find her as annoying as he says?
This fic is rather similar to Freckles although the personality of the main OC is very different. I love the love/hate banter and Ace’s frustration with Yami’s flirtatiousness. It’s a pretty rare relationship dynamic that you normally see with the genders swapped. My only criticism is that I don’t like aspects of Yami’s character. Her powers seem too…fuzzy? I prefer it when there are clear limits to a character’s abilities and when those abilities have an element of tactics. Plus, her being called ‘Yami’ (dark in Japanese) and having control over shadows seems dangerously Mary-sueish, although I wouldn’t strictly speaking call her one.
Title: Methyl Nitrate Pineapples
Sometimes you have to take a few detours before you find your way home.
This OC fulfils everything I like in a female OC. I particularly like the whole foot poisoning thing in the first few chapters. A word of caution that while the arcs the author develops are good, you have to really pay attention to each line to avoid getting lose. Personally, I empathise with One Piece authors because shounen-style fight scenes are sometimes necessary but rarly work as well in words as images like manga and anime
Title: For Fame, Fortune, Revenge, and Our Pirate King
Author: For Whimsy Alone
The Kid pirates voyage from Sabaody onward. Each Kid Pirate had a reason for joining. His crew, a mix of misfits, including a cold, bloodthirsty, woman, and their stories as they venture onward in an effort to make Kid Pirate King. M for gore, language, and mature situations.
Admittedly Little Lady is a little Mary-Sueish, just in the way the author clearly pushes you to think she’s a badass. However, I do enjoy her cold, analytical way of viewing the world and her powers are really intriguing. The idea that she just can’t die and the detail in which the author describes her healing processes is great and awesomely methodical. The only thing that annoys me is her whole organ-fishing ability, it just seems out-of-place and a bit random as well as slightly over-powered.
